FLAG HISTORY: The "Come and Take It slogan was first used during the Texas Revolution in 1835. A Lieutenant in the Mexican Army, Juan Gomez, granted a small cannon to the colony of San Antonio. The small bronze cannon was accepted by the colony but was later transported to Gonzales, Texas. The canon was a symbol of Texas pride. At a minor skirmish, a small group of Texans successfully resisted Mexican forces who came to seize their cannon. The skirmish was called the Battle of Gonzales. The cannon became a symbol of defiance and Texans fashioned a flag with the phrase "Come and Take It", the image of the cannon and a black star. This Historic American Flag has become a favorite of the modern gun rights movement.
