FLAG HISTORY:This flag represents the early colonists who joined together to protest. Their protest was against the British impositions on American economic freedom. A delegate from each of the nine colonies formed the "Stamp Act Congress". The flag of nine red and white stripes represented these "Sons of Liberty" became known as the "Rebellious Stripes". The Sons of Liberty protested the parliament's Tea Act and on December 16, 1773 took action with an event called the Boston Tea Party. Three and a half years after the Tea Party, the 13 colonies had come together to fight for independence and the nine Rebellious Stripes had grown to 13.
